Data security firewall

What is a firewall?

A firewall is network security device or software that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic, it permits, or blocks network traffic data packets based on a set of security rules . The purpose of the firewall is filter out any malicious traffic like viruses and hackers and tonight access to the viruses and hackers, and it will allow safe network traffic through such as the Internet.

By default, a firewall blocks all network traffic coming into the network it is protecting.  For the campus firewall this means that no traffic from the Internet can get on the Missouri State campus network without explicit permission.  To permit traffic through the firewall we create exceptions or rules that allow certain traffic on the network.  The rules are defined by the IP addresses of the sender and receiver of the traffic as well as the type of traffic e.g. web or SSH.

Types of firewalls

Firewalls can either be software or hardware, though it’s best to have both. A software firewall is a program installed on each computer and regulates traffic through port numbers and applications, while a physical firewall is a piece of equipment installed between your network and gateway.

How does a firewall work?

Firewall carefully analyses incoming traffic to prevent attacks from unsecure or suspicious sources by filtering the traffic that has being pre-established by a set of rules. We have all heard of a port, the port is the entry point at a computer which the firewall guards’ traffic from, this is where information is exchanged we have external devices.

A layer 4 firewall uses the following parameters for an access rule:

Source IP address or range of IP addresses

Destination IP address or range of IP addresses

Destination port or range of ports

Protocol of the traffic, TCP, ICMP, or UDP

Software based firewalls.

Windows comes with a free firewall installed called Windows defender firewall, if you have already got a Windows PC this would probably be the easiest way because it is already installed for you all you will need to do is go to your control panel in windows, then click on system and security, after you have clicked on system and security then click on windows firewall, and if the firewall is disabled you'll see a windows firewall marked off to turn it on click on the windows firewall on or off button .

Another good firewall software Is Norton 360 premium, with this package you get a smart firewall, a secure VPN, dark web monitoring, password management an online backup. To set up Norton is very easy you just download the software which doesn't take long and then you have to buy a key token to enable you to use the product. This is a yearly subscription. With Norton 360 it has a function next to the link you have searched in Google that will tell you how secure that link is before you actually clicked and enter the website. so if you are unsure if the website is unsafe or untrustworthy Norton will automatically give you a little hint.
